Where do you start when it comes to digital marketing?

This post is a response to a few questions I was recently asked by a small business owner. Where do you begin when it comes to digital marketing? Can you learn it yourself or should you hire someone?

The short answer to the first question is - begin with your website. Don't think of marketing till you have a well designed website. To answer the second question, I’d say while you most certainly can teach yourself the core concepts, it does take time and experience to get really good at executing some of the ideas you may have.
My advice to other business owners asking similar questions is - devote time to learning only if you have a fair amount of time on hand (perhaps your business is seasonal?). Experiment with some of your ideas but definitely get professional help as and when you can afford it.

Here are some free resources that can help you get started:

Hey Jessie, you make a great point. Rather than focusing on consumers right away, we should ensure that our website is able to market on our behalf.
