The 5-second rule by Mel Robbins will help you take action, change your destructive behavior patterns and also help you live your life with more courage and less fear. Anyone can apply this 5-second rule to take control of their lives and move towards a brighter tomorrow. This rule is for an average Joe struggling with procrastination, an average mom smacked by unemployment and for anyone who needs a kick in the butt. This immensely powerful 5-second rule is given by Mel Robbins, a television host and a frequent commentator on CNN. She is also a motivational speaker and contributing editor for Success magazine.
Wouldn’t you like to know how the story behind the immensely powerful 5-second rule?
It was a dark winter day somewhere in Boston and Mel Robbins, the brain behind the 5-second rule was awakened by the sound of her alarm clock. Now, this was not one of those days when Mel Robbins greeted the day with a smile. She was unemployed, had drinking habits and also burdened with money problems. She had also developed the habit of hitting on the snooze button and delaying the day ahead as long as possible.
But this particular day was different. Instead of hitting on the snooze button, Robbins started her day counting down from five. Now, that’s what the 5-second rule is which is used to prevent acting on detrimental urges. Robbins also used this rule to stop avoiding exercising and in turn pushed herself for regular jogs. This rule is very useful for people who sit around waiting for inspiration to strike. You could relate the importance of this 5-second rule back in 1955, where on a cold December night, Rosa Parks was sitting on a city bus and refused to stand up and give her seat to a white man. This made Parks arrested and four days after her arrest, people started to boycott the buses and they wanted a 26-year-old preacher to be the voice of their protest. Guess who the preacher was? It was Sir Martin Luther King, Jr.
“It happened so quickly that I did not have time to think it through. It is probable if I had, I would have declined the nomination.” – Sir Martin Luther King, Jr.
We always prefer to play it safe. But this rule could open different opportunities for us and make us courageous. Great people throughout history also had several weaknesses, like Rosa Parks was an introverted woman and Dr. King struggled with self-doubt. But they decided to come out of their comfort zones which enabled them to become great versions of themselves. So, next time you come across any problems in your life, be courageous and face your fears.
Furthermore, don’t be shy about asking questions to people. Apply the five-second rule to take control of the situation and speak your mind. Don’t wait for the right time. There’s no such time as the right time. Wake up and be fucking awesome. Successful people understand it really well. Just imagine, What if J.K Rowling would have waited for the right time for writing the Harry Potter fantasy series? What if Steve Jobs would have waited for the right time to unveil the insanely beautiful Apple smartphones? What if the Hon. Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi would have waited for the right time to contest elections in India. History would have been so different.
Whenever the cloud of procrastination appears, use the weapon of the five-second rule. Silently countdown- “five, four, three, two, one and TAKE ACTION.” What folly it is to avoid things that we know will create trouble in our lives at a later stage.
“I was poor as fuck living on the floor and I had already won. It has nothing to do with money. If you can wake up in the morning with a smile on your face, excited about the day, and say ‘you know what? I’m going to get it done to today! I’m going to do something I love to do’, then you have won” – Mark Cuban
Don’t forget, your habits, mindset, and personality traits are flexible in nature. Once, you realize it, your life will begin to drift in a new direction. Just adjust your default reactions and apply the 5-second rule to one decision at a time.
